Rule WAS enforced again end of season 19,
but with AI boss Kev not sacked from game, but just moving to team QP.

Div 1 Champs HEA lost their manager Stewart who took up reigns at bottom Div 3 club AI for start of seasoin 20.

Wooden Spoon race this season (20) is hotting up already
if NAIRN continue trade away their players!

Could be a bit wierd when/if we get 48 dedicated managers playing and the one who finishes last gets the boot.
I mean, let's face it, someone has to be last.
It's unavoidable.

From SESL Olmec Wiki to clarify 'wooden spoon' rule - previous version of this rule mentioned at start of this forum thread:

http://www.olmec.org/wiki/index.php/SESL

Wooden Spoon

At the end of each regular season – the manager whose team has finished bottom of Division 3 will automatically retire and be replaced by a waiting list manager. However, if the bottom Division 3 manager has shown sufficient effort during the season (despite their unfortunate lowly league position), then the manager may be given a further season to improve his team.

Wooden Spoon race this season (20) is hotting up
between BRE and STI at foot of Div 3.

BRE today recorded their first win of the season!

STI had elected to start over as an expansion team, but they cannot just 'give up' per the rules.

Could be a cliffhanger of a season from top of Div 1 right down to foot of Div 3 then.

Writing on wall for STI sadly.

However I am happy to offer Rene PET to manage from next season.

"...sufficient effort..."

Tough one, sufficient enough to "give up" early in the season, but effort enough to build up the cash and resource's for the next Stirllllling manager!

sterling effort not sufficient effort. I don't like to bad mouth a coach but I didn't like how STI gave up this season and sold off talent and stockpiled.
I know they were allowed by the commish, but still.

sparky- 05-26-2008
Unfortunately the rules allowed this situation. Hopefully it's a loophole we can close in future seasons. I don't think it would be fair to agree for Rene to start over then when he takes advantage of the rules as they are punish him with the sack.

Is this not a stupid rule anyway. There's hardly a huge queue of diligent managers awaiting positions and gaps do appear semi regularly anyway. I personally don't care if Rudi or Rene or whoever finish bottom 5 years on the trot. As long as they are happy with their teams, contribute and put in line-ups then I say let them get on with it.

Hibernian- 05-27-2008
The 'wooden spoon' rule is there to stop a manager "giving up" I guess.

This is exactly what STI *appear* to have done, and had STI avoided last place then he would have been OK as expansion team, however finishing last then the rules say he needs to go.

Ofcourse, I expect Rene to get placed at another SESL team, and Commish has told me months ago the 'wooden spoon' manager would be at top of waiting list and get another team before I did for start of next season.

Very interesting debate here regarding Rene's antics at Sterling which were well advertised as early as Mid season by myself & others when a number of dubious trades were allowed to stand! Commissioner Mark told me he was aware of & monitoring the situation & that it was OK! I do not really approve of what has gone on at Sterling & am afraid that it could set a dangerous president! What if 2,3,4 or more teams decided to 'Give up the Ghost' half way through next season? It does not bare thinking about ! ...What to do about Rene? ..Thats not my decision thankfully, but if he was given permission to sell of the crown jewels, how can you then sack him because he finishes bottom ? Interesting dilemma ..Very interesting!

David HAM King- 05-27-2008
He's not given up. He's just 1/3 of the way through a 3 season plan.
It would appear illogical to let a manager stockpile resources to take advantage of his soon to be fresh squad, then sack him, move him to an entirely different team, and let the incumbent manager start off afresh.
I don't think many of the managers would appreciate trying to manage STI after Rene has made his decision to disband the squad.

FROM THE RULES:

[A 2.7] Promotion/Relegation

At the end of each regular season – the manager whose team has finished bottom of Division 3 will automatically retire and be replaced by a waiting list manager. However, if the bottom Division 3 manager has shown sufficient effort during the season (despite their unfortunate lowly league position), then the manager may be given a further season to improve his team.

Why sack him, as he has been given permission to do what he has done. He decided to make STI what it is now, and someone else has to do the hard job of building the new STI. Give him a season to show that he can do it, and if he fails -> SACK HIM. If he succeeds -> MAKE HIM MANAGER OF THE SEASON

scootie- 05-27-2008
Quite right Sparky. He has played by the rules. Some people don't like it, but he has not cheated. He has stock piled cash and resources for the new STI and should have a fantastic team by Season 22.
There is a danger to starting with an expansion team in that it's generally young, with a low T11 and T17 which takes about one season to bring up to speed. The expansion team has changed since I did it though as the SLs are split differently, such that it is possible to compete in the first season. Not to any great effect, I don't think, but after the first season, the team should rocket. (Even with a numpty like me in charge).
I don't like the idea of sacking unless you think Rene has not contributed to the League. No, that just hands another manager a beautiful team to start with. I can totally understand why Craig is keen to get the nod. ;-)
Try to put yourself in Rene's shoes for just a minute. Your team is piss poor and struggling in Div 3. What are your options?
Expansion is one. It's legal and in the rules (rewritten after DUM did it and the new format is now much better). The down side of course is that you will have two seasons where you don't win very many games and history will always show that you were the slowest manager to get 25, 50 or 100 wins, but to get those wins, shows that you are in it for the long haul.

I think the reason STI boss was/may be getting boot is cos he never managed to avoid last place.

There is only 25k in press bonus ALL season in team account - so without knowing the facts, on the face of it, that seems to suggest he aint participated either.

To clarify - I offered to take on STI as they are for the sake of a hard challenge.
NO expansion nonsense needed.

Any manager in entire league thinks this is a benefit rather than a big challenge - simply email Commish and lets swap teams then and YOU take STI in current state.
Simple solution to any snipers. tongue.gif

Well done that man.

To be fair to everyone else, Craig, it was assumed you would be taking the expansion squad. The side you have been left with would struggle even if they weren't aged.

All it takes is patience. My Deveronvale team is effectively 4 years old - only one player has been at the club since before season 17.
