Yes, he is a great GoalKeeper, but 9 Million Pounds is a bit steep.

Personally I would have valued him around 5M, but then 'Mad Vlad' the Hearts owner is deep in debt, so the UK record transfer fee will help pay a bit of the debt off for the bank he owns in Lithuania.

GK Fabien Barthez was previously the highest GK transfer in UK at just under 8M.

Who would believe this - a record fee for a Scottish goalie? SESL/wink.gif

Although, I suppose the days where Scottish goalkeepers were seen as... 'erm can't think of a polite way to put it.. a joke? are long gone? (insert smiley of me hiding behind sofa to avoid flack!)

However, as a Newcastle supporter I hope the Sunderland management aren't proved 100% right in their judgement - but at £9m that's a lot of dosh and could end up on the list of disaster signings (which includes more than its fair share of Toon players SESL/abigcry.gif )

Talk Sport radio have been banging on all week about "the joke of Scottish goalkeepers"

Before Craig Gordon, the current Scotland No 1, there was Andy Goram, and before him was Jim Leighton. Both these last 2 were taken by Alex Ferguson to play at Manchester United, so they were quality GK's.

Meanwhile, England have had David James............. SESL/Moonie.gif

rolleyes.gif I was expecting something like this... but come on guys?

David James - yep old calamity has dropped some highly public clangers.
David Seaman - yep certainly a couple of high profile, erm... lobs there!

But both of these have achieved excellent stats throughout their careers at a very high level with a number of high profile clubs.

Leighton and Goram; decent enough but in my opinion not as classy as Seaman/James.

The 'joke' of Scottish goalkeepers goes back to Wembley 1961 and a 9-3 result (I'll leave it to your imagination teams involved SESL/wink.gif ) although in my opinion the tag is almost certainly unwarranted.

But as a Toon supporter the ammunition provided should this particular deal not work out is big in terms of oneupmanship / humour / banter... but I still hope the lad does well as long as Newcastle finish above Sunderland.

And lets face it, he is going to get tested a lot in the Sunderland goal behind that defence!

9 million for a Scottish GK is excessive, and last month Craig Gordon was dropped for several weeks at Sunderland.

Lets add Paul Robinson to the England comedy Goalies though.
Finally been dropped by Spurs, and not before time.
