I'm up in Glasgow for a brief visit this weekend.

I'm taking my wife to see Kylie's opening night concert at the SECC. Not really a big fan myself, although I must be honest I may take more than a passing interest SESL/wink.gif in her attire (that's Kylie not my wife SESL/wink.gif ).

We're staying at the Millenium Hotel in George Square. Anyone suggest a decent pub for a nice Sunday lunch / beer before we head back to Newcastle. If anyone's around and interested in a quick beer drop me a line and I'll give you my mobile number to set something up.

Not sure how much time we have on the Saturday but she is hoping to have time before or after the concert to visit a Chinese restaurant - my mate says that any restaurant in China Town is good and that we're not stopping far from there - any better suggestions would be considered / gratefully received.

How far is George Square from the SECC?

Cheers, Les

Les, George Square to SECC not far, a bit too long to walk, about 15-20mins, but only about 2 mins in a taxi.

Merchant City is a good area for places to eat out and grab a pint or two, just along from George Square, ask at the hotel desk and they'll point you in the general direction!

I like O'Neill's pub in there, they do decent pub grub meals aswell, or there are some posher grub places around of various persuasions in that area too.

Enjoy Kylie. SECC not far by taxi and same side of River Clyde as your hotel.

Counting House pub is over road from your hotel for cheap pint and burger.
Also, come out hotel and take 2nd right onto Buchanan Street and down to Pricess Square arcade (on your left) for a spot of Sunday lunch
(keep your lady out of the expensive shops at Princess Square though)

Chinese?
cheap option: Cha Restaurant 84, Miller St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire G1 1DT
Tel: 0141 572 1331 1 minute walk from hotel so real handy.

to take Kylie to (she can pay):
Ho Wong 82, York St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire G2 8LE Tel: 0141 221 3550
get a taxi if going to Ho Wong are area not ideal but restaurant highly renowned.

As for China Town - has a motorway going overheard so I would avoid.

Thanks very much for the replies - I'm sure my good lady will be suitably impressed at my "well informed" knowledge of Glasgow - as its such a short visit this sort of stuff is great to know and it will help me score some much needed brownie points!

I'll leave feedback on where we get to (and whether Kylie accepts my invititation to join us - a menarge a trois if you like SESL/wink.gif (I bet I didn't spell that right! But I don't care 'cos I've just got in from our stroll in the park against the Greeks (didn't wanna try and spell Olympiakos!!!!! - NUFC for European glory??? COME ON YOU MAGS!) God I'm drunk - time for bed methinks!

Thanks again though...

We really enjoyed our visit to Glasgow. Thanks for all the info.

The Counting House was our first port of call of what turned out to be a bit of a pub crawl. I don't know why I was worried about finding a nice place to eat and drink - there's loads SESL/goodluckicon.gif ! We didn't see any of this on my previous trips to Glasgow (Ally McCoist testimonial and the Ibrox Tounament won by Sampdoria going back a good few years now) Mind you I wasn't stopping in a nice 4* Hotel on these earlier trips and we didn't get much further than the pubs around Ibrox last time!

A couple which we found worthy of note this weekend were The Auctioneer - decent quick bite and a good atmoshere watching the rugby in the afternoon (the welsh fan in there was very funny to watch and had the whole pub (well us anyway) in stitches!)

Can't remember where we were when I watched Jamie Noon (a Newcastle Falcon player) score his second try (of 3) for England against Scotland but no-one took offence at my cheers - although I'm sure there were a few people happy to see us leave for the concert at the end of the first half!

My favourite - very late at night, so I may not have remembered the name correctly - was Waxy O'Connor's. An excellent pint (or ten) of Caffreys, the banter with the Norweigan football club on tour, the couple of Irish lads drowning their sorrows and the very drunk group of young Glasweigan lassies made this an excellent atmoshere!

Oh yeah, before I forget, my wife said Kylie was EXCELLENT! This was the sobering up part of the trip for me - especially when I handed over £15 for a programme SESL/abigcry.gif She is a fit wee lassie though SESL/wink.gif

Only downside of the weekend is I'm fairly sure I got caught speeding on the way back SESL/awall.gif Why do the police insist on putting mobile camera units over the bridges on beautiful quiet Sunday afternoons. The roads are clear, quiet and 75-80 mph in these conditions doesn't constitute a safety issue in my eyes - purely about money SESL/awall.gif

How much is a speeding offence these days? And how long does it take before I know for sure whether I was 'nabbed' or not? Its not that long since my license was on 0 points, back up to 3 probably now SESL/athumbsdown.gif Most I've ever had at any one time is 4 points - anyone racked up more? My guess is with the number of speed cameras around people with a clean license are the rarities!!!

Afraid to say that you will be looking at a £60 fine if they did get ya. Would have thought you will find out within a week tho if it was one of them mobile units so fingers crossed you wont hear anything SESL/fingersXicon.gif . Scotland appears to be awash with cameras from my trips up there. I myself am currently sitting on 6 points, had just got rid of 3 last year and managed to get pulled over shortly after they came off so they quickly went back on. But its all about road safety you know??? not about fleecing the motorist for a few extra quid, yeah right!! SESL/athumbsdown.gif

Glad Glasgow went well Les.

Rumours are you are soon to be on the road again
- for a "stag weekend" - even though the wedding has been called off. SESL/jester.gif

Then a trip to Cardiff to see Newcastle in the FA Cup semi final
(and maybe a trip abroad as Newcastle still in UEFA Cup?) SESL/header.gif

And a trip to Paris and then Edinburgh to watch some Newcastle rugby team too I hear ? SESL/wink.gif

It can take upto a month (I think) before you hear anything.

I'm currently sat on 3 points for being caught by a speed camear at 3:15am doing 43mph in a 35mph zone while taxi driving!! £60 fine and the 3 points for me.

Doesn't really matter to me anymore, some pe*is drove into me a few years ago and ended up snapping my ankle ligaments and damaging my back, only took my solicitors / doctors / hospital 2 and-a-half-years to realise I'd snapped my ankle ligaments and the operation to repair them was a complete failure, which now leaves unable to walk without a walking stick / crutch and unable to drive. SESL/awall.gif

Together with the back injury, it's meant I have been unable to work for coming up to 2 years and there is now a legal battle on to find out if I will work again and how much they will pay me in compensation.

32 years-old at the mo and looking at being retired out of work SESL/abigcry.gif , yes it sounds nice but it aint half boring SESL/awall.gif

What I'd give to be able to get penalty points on my DRIVING licence SESL/wink.gif

That's right Mark - expensive couple of weeks/months for me...

Last weekend - Glasgow, Scotland - for the Kylie concert (earning brownie points from my darling wife for the upcoming schedule!)

This Weekend - Newcastle, England - Easter at home with the family - the Allotment Social Club is always a nice base to start from! SESL/goodluckicon.gif

Next weekend - Paris, France - quarter final of the Heinekin Cup with the Newcastle Falcons - rumour today is Jonny may be ready for "another" comeback!
(Any other egg chasers out there???)

Weekend after - Benidorm, Spain - a nice quiet weekend planned with 18 Geordies off on a celebratory stag do - EVEN THOUGH THE WEDDING IS NOW OFF!!!!
Well it would have been rude not to go, and anyway the flights had already been paid for!!!

Weekend after (still awaiting agreement from Mrs Les! could cost me a new kitchen as compensation SESL/awhack.gif ) Cardiff, Wales - FA Cup Semi Final against Man Utd (Will we back again a month later - the lads at the local are pessimistic over this one)

In between Spain and Wales we play in Lisbon, Portugal - I haven't even dared ask about this one BUT IF WE GET TO THE FINAL WHICH I THINK WE WILL there will be another chance with this one!

I've already acquired tickets for the Heinekin Cup final - which is in Edinburgh, Scotland in May (I'd love it if the Falcons could get there - very doubtful!!!). Add in potential other trips for the UEFA Cup Final and the FA Cup final and I could either be very broke / happy / sad / divorced depending on the way things work out...

Anyone else do much travelling to support their teams?

(PS - The lads at pub were in discussions tonight for other upcoming attractions and I was a little taken aback to find my 40th Birthday on the agenda - I'm only 38 at the minute! Nothing like forward planning and making you feel old SESL/abigcry.gif

Gabbarelli- 03-28-2005
Quite an expensive hobby for you following two teams!!!

I usually try go to 1 European away game a season to see Celtic.

Not interested in rugger though.

Been to Milan this season, Brussels (Anderlecht) last year, Seville (UEFA Final v Porto), and Lyon in recent seasons. (Aswell as most friendlies we've played down South).

Waxy O'Connors is the right name of the pub you mention, nice place, but very easy to get lost in after a few pints, with all the different nooks and crannies...
